The physical landscape of Crete is dominated by mountains. A massive mountain range crosses the island from west to east. This range consists of six distinct mountain groups. These include the Idi Range, the White Mountains, and the Dikti Mountains. Other groups are Kedros, Thrypti, and the Asterousia Mountains. The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, feature 30 summits above 1,000 meters. The highest peak on the island is Mount Ida.

Crete has a complex and ancient history. From 2700 to 1420 BC, the Minoans lived here. They formed Europe's first advanced civilization.
The name of the island has many historical versions. Early references from 18th-century BC Syrian texts call it Kaptara. Neo-Assyrian records and the Bible use the name Caphtor. Ancient Egyptians used names that suggest a Minoan origin. The name Crete first appears in 15th-century BC Mycenaean Greek texts. These were written in Linear B, an early writing system. In Ancient Greek, the name appears in Homer's Odyssey. One theory says the name comes from a Luwian word meaning 'sliver.' Another theory links it to the Greek word 'krataie,' meaning strong. This might refer to the island's ancient maritime power.
The climate of Crete varies across its different regions. Most of the island has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Some southern and eastern areas have a hot semi-arid climate. High elevations experience a cold-summer Mediterranean climate. The highest mountain peaks may even have a continental climate. The atmosphere can be very humid near the sea. Winter is generally mild on the island. Snow is common on mountains from November to April.
Today, Crete is a major part of the Greek economy. The island has a population of over 600,000 people. It is the fifth most populous region in Greece. About 42% of residents live in cities and towns. The remaining 45% live in rural areas. Heraklion is the capital and largest city. It holds more than one-fourth of the total population. Other principal cities include Chania and Rethymno. The island is divided into four regional units: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi. These units are further divided into 24 municipalities.
Many unique natural and cultural sites draw visitors to Crete. The Minoan palace at Knossos is a major archaeological site. Travelers use the Nikos Kazantzakis and Daskalogiannis airports. The island retains its own local poetry and music. Nature lovers visit the Palm Beach Forest of Vai.
