Crayfish are small animals that live in fresh water.

They are related to lobsters. They breathe using feather-like gills. Some species live in fast streams. Others live in slow swamps or ditches.

Crayfish have many body parts. Their body has two main parts. One part is the cephalothorax. The other part is the abdomen. They also have walking legs. These legs have small claws on the ends. These claws help them grab food.

Crayfish are not picky eaters. They eat plants and small animals. They also eat detritus. Detritus is dead bits of plants and animals found in mud.

They can even eat grass or leaves.

Some people call them crawdads or mudbugs. In Australia, many people call them yabbies.

In the United States, people use different names too. In the north, they say crayfish. In the south, they often say crawfish. Some crayfish are in danger. A water mold called crayfish plague can make them sick. This is a big problem for crayfish in Europe.
