The name Holland might mean woodland. It was part of a large group called the Holy Roman Empire. Leaders called counts ruled the land.

Early counts had to be strong. They fought to keep people safe from Viking raids. One leader, Dirk III, worked to make the land better. He helped people take land back from nature. He also built a castle at a place called Vlaardingen. He used this castle to collect money from ships. This helped his area grow.

Some leaders had fights with the Emperor. The Emperor even sent armies to take back land. But the counts often found ways to stay in power. Over many years, Holland grew very strong. It became a leader in trade and new ideas. Later, Holland became a main part of the Dutch Republic. Today, this area is part of the Netherlands.
