Today, many people visit the mountain for adventure. Up to 100 climbers might try to reach the top on weekends. They must use tools like crampons and ice axes. These tools help them walk on steep ice and snow. Climbers often stay at the José F. Ribas Refuge. This stone hut sits at an elevation of 4,864 meters.

Records show that Cotopaxi has erupted 87 times. The first recorded eruption occurred in 1534. Scientists have found ash layers from this era in El Cajas National Park. Some of the most violent historical eruptions happened in 1742, 1744, 1768, and 1877. 

Safety remains a primary concern for the surrounding regions. The government estimates that 300,000 people are at risk from the volcano. This includes residents in the provinces of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Napo, and Pichincha. A very large explosion could threaten the suburban area of Quito, which has over 2,000,000 people. Because the volcano sits near major river valleys, the threat of lahars is constant. Monitoring by the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador helps track seismic activity and gas emissions to manage these risks.
