Convergent boundary

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Earth's surface is made of huge pieces called lithospheric plates. These plates are always moving because of heat deep inside the planet. A convergent boundary is a place where these plates crash together.

This kind of boundary is also called a destructive boundary. It matters because these collisions change the shape of our world. They can build giant mountains or create deep holes in the ocean. These big changes happen over millions or even tens of millions of years.

One main way these boundaries work is through subduction. This happens when one plate is denser, or heavier, than the other. The heavier plate slides underneath the lighter one and sinks into the mantle.

As the sinking plate goes deeper, it gets very hot. This heat causes minerals in the plate to release water. That water makes the rocks in the mantle melt into magma. This melted rock then rises up to create volcanoes at the surface.

Scientists study these movements using tools like seismic tomography. This helps them see pieces of plates that have broken off deep underground. They also use seismic records to map where plates have collided. For example, they have mapped torn slabs beneath the Caucasus area. They have also found detached slabs beneath the Tethyan suture zone. This zone includes the Alps, Zagros, and Himalaya mountain belts.

There are different ways these plates can meet. When two ocean plates collide, the denser one sinks to form volcanic island arcs.

When an ocean plate hits a continent, it creates volcanic arcs on land. It also scrapes off sediment to form an accretionary wedge. If two continents collide, neither one usually sinks. Instead, they push together to build huge mountain ranges. The collision between the Eurasian and Indian plates is currently forming the Himalayas.

These massive collisions can be very powerful and sometimes dangerous. The movement can cause huge earthquakes along a zone called the Wadati–Benioff zone.

A very large earthquake can move the ocean floor and cause a tsunami. In 2004, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean killed over 200,000 people. In 2011, a large earthquake near Japan caused $360 billion in damage. These events show us how much energy is moving beneath our feet.
