A continental shelf is a part of a continent under the sea. 
Below the slope is the continental rise. This is a flatter area made of piles of sediment. Sediment is bits of rock or soil that wash off the land. These bits fall down the slope and gather at the bottom. The shelf and slope together are called the continental margin.
Shelves are very busy places for life. Sunlight can reach the bottom in many spots. This helps plants and animals grow. Because of this, they support a lot of the ocean's life. People also use the shelf to find oil or metal.

In contrast, active continental margins have narrow and steep shelves. These are often caused by frequent earthquakes that move sediment into the deep sea.

There are also legal rules for who owns these areas. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea defines the shelf legally. It belongs to the specific country adjacent to the shore. This helps nations manage their exclusive economic zones and resources.
