Constantine VIII was a leader of the Byzantine Empire.

He was born in the year 960. His father was Emperor Romanos II. Constantine was made a co-emperor when he was only two years old. He shared the throne with many leaders. These included his stepfather, his uncle, and his brother, Basil II.

Constantine was very different from his brother. Basil II worked hard to lead the empire. Constantine did not care much for politics or the military.

In his youth, he was athletic. He liked to wrestle and ride horses. As he grew older, he loved fine food. This caused a health problem called gout. It made it hard for him to walk.

When Basil II died in 1025, Constantine became the sole emperor. He ruled for 66 years in total. This was a very long time. However, he did not focus on running the government. Some say his rule caused the empire to lose power. He had three daughters. After he died in 1028, his daughter Zoe became empress.
