Constantine had a very different life than most leaders. He did not care much for politics or the military. In his youth, he was tall and very athletic. He enjoyed wrestling and riding horses. He even helped make wrestling popular again. As he grew older, he loved eating fine foods. This caused a health problem called gout. This made it very hard for him to walk.
His brother, Basil II, was a very busy ruler. Basil worked hard on government reforms and wars. When Basil died in 1025, Constantine became the sole emperor. He was sixty-five years old at that time. In total, Constantine held the title of emperor for 66 years. This was a very long time for any leader. It was the longest reign since the time of Augustus.
During his time as the sole ruler, things changed. Constantine did not focus on running the government well. He preferred to enjoy many expensive pleasures. Because of this, the empire's military power began to fall. The noble families also gained more control over the land. Some people say his rule was a disaster for the empire. He died in November of 1028.
Constantine VIII had three daughters named Eudokia, Zoe, and Theodora. He had no sons to take his place. Before he died, he chose a man named Constantine Dalassenos to be the next leader. This man was supposed to marry Constantine's daughter, Zoe. However, the emperor's advisors chose a different man named Romanos Argyros instead. Romanos married Zoe and became the new emperor.
Constantine VIII was a ruler of the Byzantine Empire. He held the title of emperor for a very long time. He was born in the year 960. His parents were Emperor Romanos II and Empress Theophano.
Constantine's early life was shaped by the power struggles of his family. When his father died in 963, Constantine was only three years old. His mother, Theophano, became the regent for her sons. A regent is a person who manages the affairs of a child ruler. She worked with the general Nikephoros Phokas to keep power. After Nikephoros became emperor, he married Theophano. Later, John Tzimiskes became emperor after Nikephoros was killed. Tzimiskes eventually sent Theophano into exile. During these years, Constantine and his brother Basil remained in the capital as co-emperors.
As Constantine grew up, he lived a very different life than his brother. Basil II was a hardworking leader who focused on wars and government reforms. Constantine had almost no interest in statecraft or the military. He preferred to focus on his own private interests. In his youth, he was known for being tall, graceful, and athletic. He enjoyed riding horses and participating in wrestling competitions. He is even credited with bringing wrestling back into fashion. However, Constantine also loved fine food and became a gourmet. This lifestyle eventually caused him to suffer from chronic gout. This medical condition made it very difficult for him to walk.
When Basil II died in 1025, Constantine became the sole emperor. He was sixty-five years old at the time. His period of solo rule was very short, lasting less than three years. During this time, the government suffered from neglect and mismanagement. Constantine did not participate in the difficult work of running an empire. Instead, he preferred to spend his time on extravagant pleasures. The Byzantine aristocracy, or the group of wealthy noble families, took advantage of this. They worked to gain more power and control over the land. They even convinced the government to drop certain land laws that Basil II had created.
While Constantine was often passive, he could also be very harsh. When he felt challenged or suspected people of plotting against him, he responded with cruelty. He sometimes ordered the torture of members of the elite. He also used a punishment called blinding to deal with those he suspected of conspiracy.
Many historians believe Constantine's reign marked a decline for the Byzantine Empire. His time as sole ruler is often described as a disaster. Some say his lack of leadership caused the collapse of the empire's military power. Because he did not manage the state effectively, the systems that kept the empire strong began to break up. This period is seen as a major turning point in Byzantine history. The strength that had been built by previous leaders began to fade away during his short time alone on the throne.
Constantine VIII died in November 1028. He had no sons to inherit his throne. This created a problem for the future of the Macedonian dynasty. On his deathbed, he chose a man named Constantine Dalassenos to be his successor. Dalassenos was a loyal aristocrat. The plan was for him to marry Constantine's daughter, Zoe, to secure the throne. However, the emperor's advisors had a different idea. They preferred Romanos Argyros, a man they believed would be a weak ruler.
