The Conservative Party is a major political group in the United Kingdom.

Many people call the members of this party the Tories. It sits on the right side of the political spectrum. This means the party often has specific ideas about how a country should run. The party is one of two main groups that lead British politics. The other main group is called the Labour Party. Together, these two groups shape how the United Kingdom is governed.

Members of the party follow many different ideas. Some members are called Thatcherites after a famous leader. Others are called one-nation conservatives or traditionalists. These groups might disagree on some things. However, they all belong to the same large party. The party also has a very clear goal for the country. It is a unionist party, which means it wants the UK to stay together. It opposes the idea of Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland becoming independent nations.

The party has a very long history. It was founded around 1834 by a man named Robert Peel. Before this, people used the name Tory to describe certain groups. Some historians say the name Tory was once used as an insult. In 1912, the party became even larger when it merged with the Liberal Unionists. This created the Conservative and Unionist Party. Since its start, the party has produced 20 different prime ministers.

Many famous people have led the party through big moments. Winston Churchill was a very important leader. He led the country during the Second World War. Later, in the 1950s, leaders like Harold Macmillan helped run the nation.

In the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher became a major leader.

She helped the party focus on free markets. More recently, David Cameron and Rishi Sunak also served as prime ministers. The party governed the UK from 2010 until 2024.

Today, the party has a new role in the government. In the 2024 election, the party lost to the Labour Party. Because of this, it is now the second-largest party in the House of Commons. This means it acts as the official opposition. The party meets every year in the autumn for a big meeting. This meeting is called the Conservative Party Conference. It is a time for members to talk about their ideas for the future.
