Scientists study these meeting points through various specialized lenses. Hydrology focuses on the characteristic flow patterns found at confluences. Hydrologists examine how these patterns lead to erosion, the formation of bars, and the creation of scour pools.

More recently, Laurent Schindfessel, Stéphan Creëlle, and Tom De Mulder published a review in 2015 regarding flow patterns in open channel confluences. When water merges, it creates complex hydrodynamic features known as confluence flow zones (CFZ). These zones describe how the energy and movement of the water change at the junction. There are six identifiable zones within this system. They include the stagnation zone and the flow deflection zone. There is also a flow separation or recirculation zone. The water also moves through a maximum velocity zone and a flow recovery zone. Additionally, shear layers form where the different currents interact with one another.

They must design the discharge point to be structurally stable. This often requires adding structural bracing to support the entrance where a lateral culvert meets the main structure. Engineers calculate velocities and hydraulic efficiencies by adjusting gradients, cascades, and junction angles to minimize turbulent flow.

Confluences hold immense cultural and societal significance. Many major cities, such as Chongqing, St. Louis, and Khartoum, grew specifically at these junctions.

Because rivers often serve as political boundaries, confluences can create tripoints where three nations, states, or provinces meet. An example is found at Kazungula, Zambia, where the Chobe River meets the Zambezi. This point defines the borders of Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia. In some cities, confluences are used for public beauty, such as the parks in Pittsburgh or the fountain at Point State Park.

Finally, many confluences are considered sacred in various religions. In Hinduism, the confluence of sacred rivers is a major pilgrimage site for ritual bathing. At Devprayag, India, the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganges.
