It is a common part of modern buildings. Slabs can make floors or ceilings. Some slabs sit on the ground. These are called ground-bearing slabs.

Most slabs use steel to stay strong. This steel is called rebar. Rebar helps the slab hold weight. Some slabs are very thin. We call these mud slabs. They are often used for paths or paving.

Concrete also manages heat. It has high thermal mass. This means it takes a long time to change temperature. This helps a building stay cool during the day. It can also keep it warm at night. To save energy, builders often add insulation. This is a layer that slows heat flow. Sometimes, builders put pipes inside the slab for heating. This is called underfloor heating. Engineers use special software to plan these slabs. They must think about the soil and the weight. This helps the building stay safe and strong.
