We use computers every day.
Computers help us every day.
Computer security keeps our digital world safe. It protects software, systems, and networks. People use these tools for many things. We use them for power grids and money.
A vulnerability is a flaw in a system. It is like a weak spot in a fence. Bad actors look for these spots to cause harm. They use many types of attacks.
Some attacks use malware. Malware is bad software made to harm a computer. A virus spreads by hiding in programs. A worm can spread all by itself.
Other attacks happen in different ways. A backdoor is a secret way to get into a system. A denial-of-service attack tries to crash a network by overloading it. Eavesdropping is when someone listens to private messages.
Computer security is a very important field of study. It focuses on protecting software, systems, and networks from many different threats. These threats can cause people to lose their private data. They can also lead to the theft of information or damage to hardware. Sometimes, attacks can even stop important services from working correctly.
Security works by finding and fixing flaws called vulnerabilities. A vulnerability is a weak spot in how a system functions. When a person finds a way to use a flaw, it is called an exploit. Attackers often use automated tools or special scripts to hunt for these spots. One way to protect data is through encryption. Encryption scrambles information so that only the right person can read it.
People have studied how to find these flaws for a long time. Many known vulnerabilities are kept in a special list called the CVE database. This helps experts track and fix problems as they appear. Different groups of people face different kinds of risks. In April 2023, a report from the United Kingdom looked at many businesses and charities. It found that 32% of businesses and 24% of charities had experienced attacks in the year before. Large companies often have better tools to defend themselves than small businesses do.
There are many ways an attack can happen. Malware is software made to cause harm to a computer or its users.
Cybersecurity connects to almost everything we do in the modern world. When you use a website, you are using digital infrastructure.
