Computer memory

Computer memory is a very important part of how technology works. It stores data and programs so the computer can use them right away.

People often call this main memory or primary storage. You might also hear it called RAM, which stands for random-access memory. This memory works at a very high speed. It is much faster than mass storage, like a hard drive.

Because it is so fast, it helps the computer run smoothly. It can even act as a buffer to help with reading and writing data.

Modern memory is made of tiny parts called semiconductor memory. This memory uses small components called MOS transistors on an integrated circuit.

There are two main types of this memory. The first is volatile memory, which needs power to keep its information. If the power goes out, volatile memory forgets everything. A common kind is DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory. Another kind is SRAM, or static random-access memory, which is used for CPU cache. The second type is non-volatile memory. This kind keeps data even when the power is turned off. Examples include flash memory and ROM.

Memory technology has changed a lot since the early 1940s. The first electronic computer, the ENIAC, used thousands of vacuum tubes.

These tubes could only store about 20 numbers. Later, J. Presper Eckert developed acoustic delay-line memory using mercury in glass tubes. In 1946, Fred Williams invented the Williams tube. This was the first random-access memory. It used electron beams in glass tubes to store information.

Later, magnetic-core memory became very popular. It could remember data even after the power was lost. This was a huge step for early computers.

Many scientists helped build the memory we use today. Frederick W. Viehe and An Wang worked on magnetic-core memory in the late 1940s. In 1964, John Schmidt at Fairchild Semiconductor developed MOS memory. This new kind was cheaper and used less power. Robert H. Dennard at IBM later created a single-transistor DRAM cell in 1967. This led to the first commercial DRAM chip, the Intel 1103, in 1970.

Flash memory was also a big discovery. Fujio Masuoka at Toshiba invented it in the early 1980s. He presented NOR flash in 1984 and NAND flash in 1987.

You can think of computer memory like a workspace. Mass storage is like a big bookshelf that holds many books. It can hold a huge amount of information, but it is slow to use.

Computer memory is like the top of your desk. It is a smaller space, but you can reach things very quickly. This allows you to work on your programs without waiting. If your desk gets too full, the computer uses virtual memory. This moves things to storage to make more room. This way, your computer stays fast and ready for work.
