A group called the Electoral Commission looked at the votes. They picked Hayes as the winner. But many Democrats were not happy. They used a filibuster to stop the results. A filibuster is a way to delay a vote by talking for a long time. They even talked about using force.

To fix this, leaders made an informal deal. This is often called the Compromise of 1877. Democrats agreed to let Hayes be president. In return, the government would take soldiers out of the South. These soldiers had been there to help during Reconstruction.

After the deal, Hayes became president. He moved the last troops out of South Carolina and Louisiana. This ended the Reconstruction era. Many Black people in the South lost their political rights. It was a sad and hard change for them.
