Complex logarithm

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Math has many ways to look at numbers. One special way is called a complex logarithm.

Complex log domain
Complex log domain

This is a version of the natural logarithm. It works with complex numbers. These are numbers that can live on a flat plane.

A complex logarithm can have many answers for one number. This happens because of how complex numbers work. You can think of them as points on a map. If you move around a center point, you can end up in a new spot.

Riemann surface log
Riemann surface log

This makes the function have many branches. A branch is just a way to pick one answer. We often use a special choice called the principal value. This helps us stay on one path.

This math tool can also change shapes. It can turn circles into straight lines.

Complex log mapping
Complex log mapping

It can turn rays into horizontal lines too. This is called a conformal map. It keeps the angles between lines the same. This helps us see how shapes move and change. It is a very useful tool in math.
