The land has many different parts. In the north, there are high mountains. The Guadarrama range has peaks above 2,000 meters. One very high peak is called Peñalara. In the south, the land is much lower and flatter.
You can find many animals here. Wild goats, called ibex, live on the rocks.

The geography of the region is shaped by its water and mountains. Most of the area sits within the Tagus River basin. The Tagus River flows along the southern border. This river drains water from several other rivers. These include the Jarama, the Alberche, and the Henares. 
Climate and altitude change how the land feels. The region has a generally temperate climate. It ranges from Mediterranean to semi-arid types. Mediterranean climates often have dry summers. Semi-arid climates are also quite dry. The capital city has a cold semi-arid climate. In the mountains, the weather is much colder. The peaks can have temperatures below freezing in January and February. Madrid is the European capital with the lowest average annual precipitation. This means it receives very little rain on average. Many reservoirs and dams exist to manage water. The Santillana reservoir is the largest in the area.
The mountains provide a home for many species. Peñalara is the highest peak in the Guadarrama range. It rises to 2,428 meters above sea level. Other high points include the Bola del Mundo at 2,258 meters. These high areas support dense forests of Scots pine and Pyrenean oak. The Lozoya Valley hosts a large colony of black vultures. The Iberian ibex is another famous animal here. These animals were reintroduced in 1990 after being gone for a century.
Many different types of animals live in the lower lands. Reptiles like the Algerian sand racer live in the region.
