A communist revolution is a way to change how a country is run. It uses the ideas of Karl Marx. Marx was a thinker who believed workers should lead the world. He wanted to replace capitalism with communism. Capitalism is a system where private people own businesses. In communism, the working class would run things together.

There are different ways to start these changes. Some people follow Leninism. This idea says a small group of leaders should lead the way. Other people, like Rosa Luxemburg, disagreed. They thought the whole working class should be involved. They wanted very large groups to join the cause.

These events happened in many places. The October Revolution in Russia helped start the Soviet Union. In China, a long revolution led to a new government. In Cuba, a revolution changed the state in the 1950s. Some revolutions worked, but many others did not. History shows many groups tried to make these big changes.
A communist revolution is a big change in how a country works. It is often called a proletarian revolution. This means it is led by the working class. These people want to replace capitalism with a system called communism. Capitalism is when private people own businesses and property. In a communist system, the workers would run things together. Some people believe socialism comes first as a middle step. This idea is based on the thoughts of Karl Marx. He believed that workers must unite to free themselves from unfair treatment.
There are different ways people think these revolutions should happen. Karl Marx believed the working class would lead a struggle against the ruling class. This would lead to a new way of governing. A leader named Lenin had a different idea. He argued for a "vanguard" to lead the way. This is a small group of professional revolutionaries. They would be fully dedicated to the cause. They would act as the core of the movement. However, other thinkers like Rosa Luxemburg disagreed with this. She and others believed the whole working class must be involved. They wanted to build very large parties with many members.
History shows many of these movements happened in different times and places. Some were successful and changed their nations forever. The October Revolution in Russia happened between 1917 and 1923. This event helped create the Soviet Union. In 1921, the Mongolian Revolution ended rule from China. This led to the Mongolian People's Republic. Between 1927 and 1949, the Chinese Communist Revolution took place. This changed China and led the old government to Taiwan.
Many other revolutions happened during big wars or social changes. In Yugoslavia, the People's Liberation War lasted from 1941 to 1945. This war helped defeat axis powers in the Balkans. In 1953, the Cuban Revolution began to change the country. It worked to overthrow the rule of Fulgencio Batista. The revolution turned Cuba into a socialist state. In Vietnam, the August Revolution in 1945 forced Emperor Bảo Đại to step down. This helped start the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
Not every revolution was successful in its goals. Some movements were stopped by governments or other groups. The Paris Commune in 1871 was a famous example. It was a revolt that was eventually suppressed. The Easter Rising in Ireland happened in 1916. The rebel forces had to surrender. In Finland, the Civil War from 1918 to 1922 ended with a victory for the "Whites." Many movements in places like Greece and Spain also faced hard struggles. These events show how people have tried to change their worlds through different paths.
A communist revolution is a specific type of political upheaval known as a proletarian revolution. It is driven by the ideas of Marxism. The primary goal is to replace capitalism with a system called communism. In a capitalist system, private individuals own businesses and property. In a communist system, the working class is intended to run society. Some theories suggest that socialism acts as an intermediate stage. This socialism serves as a bridge between capitalism and full communism. This progression is a central part of Marxist-Leninist views.

The mechanics of these revolutions depend on different political theories. Karl Marx believed revolution was a historical necessity. He argued that a class struggle would occur between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. The proletariat is the organized working class. The bourgeoisie is the ruling class that owns the means of production. Marx predicted the proletariat would overthrow the bourgeoisie to establish a dictatorship of the proletariat. This stage would allow the working class to manage society and transition toward communism.
Vladimir Lenin proposed a different method for achieving this goal. He argued that a revolution must be led by a "vanguard." A vanguard is a group of professional revolutionaries. These individuals are fully dedicated to the communist cause. They form the nucleus or the core of the revolutionary movement. This means a revolution under Leninism might not be a spontaneous proletarian revolution. Instead, it is guided by a specialized group of leaders. This distinction is a major point of debate in communist theory.
Other thinkers disagreed with the idea of a small vanguard. Rosa Luxemburg was a prominent critic of Lenin's approach. She belonged to a group known as the left communists. Many critics argued that the entire working class must be involved. They believed a revolution could only succeed if most workers were committed. These groups sought to build massive communist parties with very large memberships. They wanted the movement to be a broad, collective effort of the people.

History shows many successful communist revolutions that changed global politics. The October Revolution occurred between 1917 and 1923. It led to the creation of the Soviet Union. In 1921, the Mongolian Revolution established the Mongolian People's Republic. The Chinese Communist Revolution lasted from 1927 to 1949. This long conflict resulted in the People's Republic of China. It also caused the Republic of China to flee to Taiwan. These events show how revolutions can reshape entire nations and borders.

Some revolutions occurred during major global conflicts. The Yugoslav People's Liberation War took place from 1941 to 1945. It helped defeat axis powers in the Balkans. This war also abolished the Yugoslav monarchy. In 1945, the August Revolution in Vietnam forced Emperor Bảo Đại to abdicate. This led to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In Cuba, the revolution from 1953 to 1959 overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. This changed Cuba into a socialist state.

Not all communist movements achieved their goals. Many were unsuccessful or were suppressed by existing governments. The Paris Commune of 1871 was a notable unsuccessful revolt. In the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, rebel forces were forced to surrender. The Finnish Civil War from 1918 to 1925 ended in a victory for the "Whites." Some movements involved massive loss of life. For example, the Chinese Civil Revolution involved roughly 8 million deaths. The Greek Civil War between 1946 and 1950 resulted in 80,000 to 158,000 deaths. These figures highlight the intense nature of these historical struggles.
