Columbia has a long history. Long ago, Spanish explorers traveled through this area. Later, the city became the state capital in 1786. The city was built in a square shape. It had many wide streets. In the 1800s, many people grew cotton here. Cotton was very important for the local economy. During the Civil War, much of the city burned. A large fire destroyed many parts of the town. After the war, people worked hard to rebuild. Today, it is a busy place for work and school.
