It sits southwest of the mainland of Costa Rica. The island has a roughly rectangular shape. It holds a unique place in Earth's geography. It is the only landmass above water on the Cocos tectonic plate. It also serves as the southernmost point of North America if non-continental islands are included.

The island's environment is shaped by a wet, tropical climate. This creates an ecological character different from other nearby islands. For example, it differs from the Galápagos Archipelago or the island of Malpelo. The island is surrounded by deep waters and strong counter-currents. These oceanic qualities support a massive amount of marine life. Divers travel here to see large pelagic species. These are fish that live in the open ocean.

The marine ecosystem is one of the most significant features of the island. The waters host the largest schools of hammerhead sharks in the world. Divers also encounter rays, dolphins, and many colorful species. These animals live among one of the largest coral reefs in the southeastern Pacific. Specific dive sites include Bajo Alcyone and Manuelina Garden. Dos Amigos Grande is another site known for its natural underwater arch. The island was named one of the top 10 scuba diving spots globally.

Human history on the island is largely defined by discovery and maritime transit. It is believed the island was uninhabited before Europeans arrived. Spanish navigator Juan de Cabezas discovered the island in 1526. Later, British explorers used the island as a supply stop. In 1793, James Colnett took 2,000 coconuts from the island. Two years later, George Vancouver anchored at Chatham Bay. He gathered water and wood for his ships. He even carved his ship's names into a rock.

Cocos Island is also famous for legends of pirate treasure. Many stories claim vast riches were buried in its forests. One legend involves Mary Welch and Captain Bennett Graham. She claimed 350 tons of gold were hidden there. Another famous tale is the Treasure of Lima. This story says Captain William Thompson stole treasure and buried it on Cocos in 1820. Hundreds of expeditions have searched for these treasures. Most have failed to find anything substantial. Even the adventurer August Gissler only found a few gold coins.

The island has a complex administrative history with Costa Rica. It was annexed by the country in 1832. In 1863, a ship called the Adelante left 426 Tongan people on the island. They had contracted smallpox. Sadly, only 38 people survived after one month. In 1970, the island became the eleventh district of Puntarenas. Today, the island is a Costa Rican National Park. It was established in 1978.

Conservation is the primary focus for the island today. In 1997, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site. This designation was expanded in 2002 to include a large marine zone. The island is also listed as a Wetland of International Importance. There are no permanent residents on the island. Only Costa Rican park rangers live there in small encampments. They stay at places like Wafer Bay and Chatham Bay.

Access for tourists is very limited. People must have permission from rangers to go ashore. This helps protect the fragile plants and animals from harm.
