Coca-Cola, often called Coke, is a globally recognized cola soft drink.

It is produced by the Coca-Cola Company, one of the largest corporations in the United States. In 2024, the company ranked 94th on the Fortune 500 list by revenue. The brand is incredibly influential across the globe. In 2023, Interbrand identified it as the sixth most valuable brand in the world. Its reach is massive, with products sold in over 200 countries and territories. In 2013, data showed that consumers drank more than 1.8 billion servings of the company's beverages every single day.

The production of Coca-Cola follows a specific industrial process involving concentrate and bottling. First, the Coca-Cola Company manufactures a concentrated syrup. This concentrate is then sold to licensed bottlers located around the world. These bottlers hold exclusive territory contracts to manage specific geographic areas. To create the final beverage, bottlers mix the concentrate with filtered water and sweeteners. In North America, the sweetener used is often high-fructose corn syrup.

Once mixed, the liquid is packaged into cans and bottles. These finished products are then distributed to retail stores, restaurants, and vending machines. The company also provides concentrate specifically for soda fountains used in large restaurants.

The brand has expanded to include many different varieties of cola. While the original recipe is the most famous, the company has introduced several other versions. Common examples include Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. There are also flavored versions like Coca-Cola Cherry and Coca-Cola Vanilla. Some special editions include flavors such as lemon, lime, or even coffee.

The company also produces Caffeine-Free versions of its drinks. This variety allows the brand to reach many different consumer preferences.

The history of the drink begins in the late 19th century in Atlanta, Georgia. It was invented by John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist and former Confederate Colonel. Pemberton had a medical degree and sought to create a medicinal tonic.

He originally registered a drink called Pemberton's French Wine Coca in 1885. However, when local prohibition laws passed in 1886, he developed a non-alcoholic version. This new version was marketed as a "temperance drink." The first official sales of Coca-Cola occurred at Jacob's Pharmacy on May 8, 1886. At that time, a single glass cost only five cents.

Ownership of the brand changed hands through several complex legal and business deals. In 1888, Pemberton sold ownership rights to a businessman named Asa Griggs Candler. Candler used aggressive marketing tactics to help the drink dominate the global market.

The transition of power was not simple, as Pemberton's son, Charley, also held rights to the name. After John Pemberton died in August 1888, Candler moved quickly to secure sole control. By May 1889, Candler claimed full ownership after investing approximately $2,300. In 1919, the company was purchased by a group of investors led by Ernest Woodruff's Trust Company. This sale cost $25 million and allowed the company to reincorporate in Delaware.

One of the most famous aspects of Coca-Cola is its secret formula. The name itself is derived from two of its original ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts.

The kola nut is a natural source of caffeine. While many recipes and recreations have been published, the true formula remains a trade secret. Only a small number of anonymous employees are said to know the exact recipe. This secrecy serves as a powerful marketing tool for the company. The drink was so influential that it created an entire category of beverages known as "colas."

Bottling technology also evolved significantly as the company grew. The very first bottling of Coca-Cola took place in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on March 12, 1894.

This was done at the Biedenharn Candy Company. Early bottles looked very different from the iconic shapes used today. In the early years, Candler sold the bottling rights for a very low price. He eventually realized the importance of the bottling process as the company expanded globally. Today, the company uses massive industrial plants to supply its worldwide network of bottlers.
