The resulting wet steam is mechanically compressed to extract water vapor. This process transfers the heat of vaporization back to the remaining gaseous steam. This pressurized steam is then superheated and injected back into the tumbler. This cycle is highly efficient and can result in drying times that are half as long as heat pump dryers.

Other specialized drying methods exist for specific needs or environments. Spin dryers, or centrifuge machines, spin their drums much faster than a standard washer. This extracts water through centrifugal force and can remove more water in two minutes than a heated dryer can in twenty. Convectant dryers use a vertical chamber where a heating unit at the bottom warms the air. The natural tendency of hot air to rise brings it into contact with the clothes. There are also solar dryers, which use a box-shaped construction to capture the sun's heat.

Maintaining these machines is vital for both efficiency and safety. One major concern is lint build-up within the exhaust conduit. This conduit includes the flex transition hose, the rigid galvanized pipe, and the vent duct hood. If the vent becomes partially obstructed by lint, the drying time increases significantly. A blocked vent also causes the internal temperature to rise, which can be dangerous. Furthermore, users must manage the triboelectric effect, which causes static cling. Modern dryers use electronic controls and humidity sensors to prevent over-drying and reduce this static charge.
