Among fish, a true cloaca is only found in lobe-finned fishes and elasmobranchs, which include sharks and rays. Most other fish, such as teleosts, have entirely separate openings. 
Mammals show a complex history regarding the cloaca. Most adult placental mammals do not have one. However, we can see how the structure develops by looking at embryos. In the early embryonic stage, the cloaca receives the urinary bladder, the rectum, and the Wolffian duct. As the embryo develops, a fold begins to divide the area. This fold eventually separates the cloaca into a ventral urogenital sinus and a dorsal rectum. In males, the anterior region becomes the penile urethra. In females, it becomes the vestibule or urogenital sinus. 
Despite this separation, some mammals retain a cloaca into adulthood. Monotremes, which are egg-laying mammals, possess a true cloaca. Some marsupials also show traces of this structure. In most marsupials, the genital tract is separate from the anus, but an external trace remains. This trait suggests a connection to the ancient amniotes from which mammals evolved. The marsupial mole is a unique exception because it possesses a true cloaca. This specific detail has led some to argue that it is not a true marsupial. Other mammals that retain a cloaca include beavers, pikas, shrews, and the Afrosoricida order. 
Finally, the cloacal region is often linked to other biological behaviors. Many animals have a secretory organ called the cloacal gland located in this area. This gland is used by certain amphibians, monotremes, marsupials, and reptiles for scent-marking. This behavior helps animals communicate through chemical cues. While the cloaca is a simple opening, it is a vital hub for life, movement, and communication across the animal kingdom.
