Music was part of Abbado's life from the very beginning. His father was a professional violinist and his mother was a skilled pianist. He studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Milan Conservatory. He graduated with a piano degree in 1955. Later, he studied conducting in Vienna to learn more. He even joined a chorus just to watch famous conductors work in rehearsals. This helped him learn how to lead a large group of players. In 1958, he made his first official debut as a conductor in Trieste.

Abbado's life was shaped by both music and history. He grew up in Milan during the Nazi occupation of Italy. During this time, his mother went to prison for helping a Jewish child. These events gave him strong political beliefs. When he was only eleven years old, he wrote a message on a wall that caught the attention of the authorities. As he grew up, he attended many concerts at La Scala. He watched famous conductors like Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler. Hearing a specific performance of music by Claude Debussy made him decide to become a conductor.

Throughout his career, Abbado led many important musical groups. In 1969, he became a leader at La Scala. He later became the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1989. He also led the Vienna State Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Abbado loved to help younger musicians grow in their skills. He founded the European Union Youth Orchestra in 1978. He also started the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in 1988. These groups helped new players find their way in the world of music.

Abbado was known for his special way of working with orchestras. He often spoke very little during rehearsals. He had a deep love for the music of Gustav Mahler. He recorded many of Mahler's symphonies with different orchestras. In his later years, he faced a hard battle with stomach cancer. He died in Bologna on January 20, 2014, at the age of 80. To honor him, an orchestra played a song in an empty theater. This performance was shown to a crowd outside and streamed online.
