Throughout his career, Bernard faced challenges regarding his research facilities. At one time, his assigned laboratory was merely a regular cellar. Even when he was chosen as the inaugural chair of physiology at the Sorbonne, no laboratory was provided. Eventually, Louis Napoleon built a laboratory for him at the Jardin des Plantes in 1864. Bernard's scientific achievements earned him many honors. In 1860, he joined the American Philosophical Society. He was also a member of the Académie française and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. When he died on February 10, 1878, France gave him a public funeral. This was a rare honor that had never been granted to a man of science before.
