Classic Maya collapse

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Long ago, many Maya people lived in big cities. They built tall stone buildings. They also carved many stone signs.

Then, things began to change. Many people left their homes. They moved to new lands. Some cities were left empty.

Why did this happen? It is a big mystery. Some think it was a long time with no rain. This made it hard to grow food.

Other people think sickness made them leave. Others think new groups came to their lands. The Maya people did not disappear, though.

Many Maya people still live in these lands today. They are still part of the world.
