This city is a vital part of the Triple Frontier region. This is a unique area where the borders of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina meet. The city sits directly on the Paraná River. This river forms a natural border between Paraguay and Brazil. The Friendship Bridge connects Ciudad del Este to the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu.

The economy of Ciudad del Este is driven by international trade. It is one of the largest free-trade zones in the world. A free-trade zone is an area where goods can be traded with fewer taxes. This status attracts many shoppers from Brazil and Argentina. They often come to purchase electronics, computers, and luxury goods like perfumes.

The city's economy is also linked to the Itaipú Dam. This is one of the largest hydroelectric power plants on Earth. Paraguay sells 95% of its share of the energy from this dam to Brazil. This energy sale is worth approximately US$300 million. The city also hosts many industrial and service companies. These include businesses that manufacture textiles and auto parts.

Another important body of water is Yrendy Lake. This lake is designated as an ecological sanctuary because of its natural beauty. The city is also part of a larger metropolitan area called Gran Ciudad del Este. This area includes the districts of Hernandarias, Minga Guazú, and Presidente Franco.

The history of the city is tied to national development goals. In the 1950s, the Paraguayan government started a plan called the "March to the East." This plan aimed to reach the Atlantic Ocean through Brazil. This was intended to solve problems with expensive freight costs. In 1955, a commission was formed to improve the highway to the east. Captain Porfirio Pereira Ruiz Díaz led the construction of a 200-kilometer road section. The city was officially founded by decree on February 3, 1957.

The high humidity can make the heat feel very intense. In July, the average daily temperature is around 16 °C (61 °F). Winter temperatures can range from 0 °C to 30 °C. The city receives about 1,700 millimeters of rain every year. A rare event occurred in the winter of 1982 when the city saw snow. This was only the second time snow was recorded in the country.

Tourism is a major part of life in the Triple Frontier. Visitors come for shopping, but they also visit natural wonders. The Itaipú Dam is located only 20 km to the north.
