Today, the bank operates branches in 19 different countries. In the United States, its branches are mostly found in six large metropolitan areas. These cities include New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Miami.

The bank's history began over two centuries ago. It was founded on June 16, 1812, as the City Bank of New York.

Samuel Osgood, a statesman and retired Colonel, served as the first president. Following Osgood, several leaders managed the bank, including William Few and Peter Stagg. In 1831, the bank experienced one of America's first major heists. Two burglars, James Honeyman and William J. Murray, stole bank notes and 398 gold doubloons. In modern currency, that theft would be worth about $52 million.

Throughout the 1800s, the bank played a vital role in American history. It helped finance war bonds for the War of 1812. During the American Civil War, it provided $50 million in war bonds to support the Union. In 1865, the bank joined the national banking system under the National Bank Act. This led to a name change to The National City Bank of New York. By 1868, it was already one of the largest banks in the country.

By 1895, it had grown to become the largest bank in the United States.

The early 20th century brought both global expansion and significant controversy. In 1904, the bank helped finance the construction of the Panama Canal. By 1914, it became the first U.S. national bank to open an overseas office in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

However, the bank's activities in Haiti also caused debate. After the U.S. occupation of Haiti began in 1915, Citibank imposed a $30 million loan on the Haitian government. Some observers, like George Padmore, argued this helped turn Haiti into an "American slave colony." The bank saw large financial gains from these debt payments during the 1920s.

Rapid growth in the 1920s eventually led to a period of crisis. Charles E. Mitchell became president in 1921 and chairman in 1929. Under his leadership, the bank expanded to 100 branches in 23 countries outside the U.S. by 1930. However, many people believe the bank's policies contributed to the stock market crash of 1929. This crash helped trigger the Great Depression. In 1933, a Senate committee called the Pecora Commission investigated Mitchell. They looked into his role regarding massive financial losses and tax avoidance. This investigation eventually led to his resignation.

In the mid-to-late 20th century, the bank underwent several structural changes. It merged with the First National Bank in 1955, becoming The First National City Bank of New York. In 1967, the company reorganized as a one-bank holding company called Citicorp.

In 1976, the bank officially changed its name to Citibank, N.A. This change helped prevent confusion with another bank in Ohio called National City Corp. The bank also became a leader in the credit card industry. In 1967, it introduced the "Everything Card." This card was later joined with the Master Charge system, which is now known as MasterCard.

Citibank's influence continues through modern financial technology and global reach. In the 1980s, it launched the Citicard, which allowed customers to manage accounts without a paper passbook.

By 1994, it had become the largest credit card issuer in the world. The bank also uses technology to help customers, such as branch terminals with digital displays. Today, the bank remains a massive part of the global economy. It connects different countries through international banking and various consumer services.
