The Cisplatine War was a major armed conflict during the 1820s. It was fought between the Empire of Brazil and the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. The main cause was a dispute over control of the Banda Oriental region.

Brazil had annexed this area and named it the Cisplatina province. This struggle was rooted in old colonial borders from Spain and Portugal. These empires had long competed for control over the River Plate basin. Control of this area meant control over vital trade routes to the continent's interior.

The conflict had deep historical roots dating back to the late 1600s. In 1679, the Portuguese crown ordered the founding of Colônia do Sacramento. This town was built on a peninsula with a natural harbor. The Portuguese wanted to secure access to the continent and stop silver smuggling. In response, the Spaniards founded Montevideo on the opposite bank in 1724.

These competing settlements created a cycle of tension between the two empires for centuries.

By the early 1800s, the region became even more unstable. A leader named José Gervasio Artigas fought for independence and resisted both Spanish and Portuguese control. He led a group of people in what was known as the "Exodus of the Oriental People."

Eventually, Luso-Brazilian forces invaded and defeated Artigas in 1816. They conquered Montevideo in 1817. By 1821, the local council approved joining the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. This made the region the province of Cisplatina under Brazilian rule.

The war itself was sparked by a failed diplomatic mission in 1823. The United Provinces sent representatives to Brazil to negotiate a peaceful withdrawal. Brazil rejected these proposals and refused to leave the province. In 1825, a group of patriots called the Thirty-Three Orientals launched a rebellion.

Led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, they declared independence from Brazil. They also declared they wanted to join the United Provinces. This rebellion led to direct military conflict between the two nations.

Fighting occurred across both land and sea with varying results. On land, the armies reached a military impasse. The largest land battle was the battle of Ituzaingó.

While the United Provinces occupied the countryside, they could not capture major cities like Montevideo. At sea, the Brazilian Navy was more successful. They imposed a naval blockade on the River Plate to hurt the Argentine economy.

An Irish-born admiral named William Brown led the small Argentine fleet against the larger Brazilian forces.

The economic and political costs of the war were immense for both sides. The Brazilian naval blockade and the land stalemate drained resources. In Brazil, the financial burden and political disputes weakened Emperor Pedro I. These issues eventually led to his abdication in 1831.

In the United Provinces, the war caused intense internal political struggles. These tensions between the Federalists and Unitarians eventually led to a civil war. Both governments realized that continuing the war was unsustainable.

Peace was finally achieved through international mediation by the British. On 27 August 1828, representatives signed the Preliminary Peace Convention.

This agreement ended the hostilities between Brazil and the United Provinces. It also decided the fate of the disputed territory. Instead of joining either empire, Cisplatina became an independent state. This new nation is known today as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. This outcome fundamentally changed the political map of South America.
