arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Movies have a long history in Taiwan.

They first arrived in 1901. In the early days, films were silent. A person called a benshi would stand near the screen. They would tell the story with their voice. A benshi could change the mood of a film. They could make a sad scene feel like a comedy.

Over time, many kinds of films became popular. Some films showed people fighting with swords. These are called wuxia pian. Other films showed real life. In the 1980s, a group called New Taiwanese Cinema began. These directors made movies that felt very honest. They showed how people lived in cities and small towns. They also looked at how Taiwan was changing.

Today, the government helps the film industry. They have a Film Fund to give money to makers. This fund helps new directors make their first big movie. Many people also make documentaries. These are films about real life and true events. Some documentaries show big things like earthquakes. Filmmakers in Taiwan are known all over the world.

Famous directors like Ang Lee help make Taiwan's movies special.
