Unlike other Arctic seas, the Chukchi Sea has very few islands. Wrangel Island marks the northwestern limit, while Herald Island sits near the northern limit. Several small islands also line the Siberian and Alaskan coasts.
The sea is often covered by thick ice, making it navigable for only about four months each year. The Chukchi Sea Shelf acts as a bridge between the continental shelves of the United States and Russia. Within this shelf, a specific area called the Chukchi Corridor functions as a massive underwater highway. This corridor facilitates one of the largest marine mammal migrations on Earth. Species that use this path include the bowhead whale, the beluga whale, the Pacific walrus, and the bearded seal. The corridor is essential for the survival and movement of these animals.


The germination process of these cysts depends heavily on water temperature. At a bottom temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, it takes about 28 days for cysts to germinate. If the temperature rises to 8 degrees Celsius, the process speeds up to just 10 days. Because of climate change, warmer summer waters are causing these blooms to start three weeks earlier than they did two decades ago. This change extends the window for harmful blooms to appear at the surface. Such shifts in the environment can impact the entire marine food web.
