Deep under the water, there is a large feature called the Hope Basin. Most of the sea is not very deep. In fact, 56% of the area is less than 200 meters deep. The sea has very few islands compared to other Arctic seas. Wrangel Island sits at the northwestern edge of the water.

People have explored this cold area for a long time. In 1928, Harald Sverdrup found the sea was different from nearby waters. He decided to name it after the Chukchi people. These people live on the nearby Chukotka Peninsula. They have traditionally hunted walrus and whales in these waters.

Many explorers faced hard jobs in the ice. In 1913, a ship named the Karluk sank near Herald Island. In 1934, the steamer Chelyuskin was also crushed by heavy ice.

Many animals use the sea as a giant hallway. This path is called the Chukchi Corridor. It is used for one of the biggest migrations in the world.

They can produce a toxin called saxitoxin. This can cause shellfish poisoning for animals and people. The beds of these resting plants are 145,600 square kilometers. That is about the same size as the state of Iowa.

The history of the sea involves many famous explorers and difficult journeys. In 1928, the Norwegian explorer Harald Sverdrup conducted hydrographic observations. He discovered that this sea was distinct from the East Siberian Sea. Consequently, it was named after the Chukchi people living on the Chukotka Peninsula. The name was officially approved in 1935. Throughout the early 20th century, many ships faced the dangers of the ice. In 1913, the ship Karluk sank near Herald Island after being crushed by ice. In 1934, the steamer Chelyuskin also sank after drifting in heavy ice for two months.

Biological life in the sea is both diverse and sometimes hazardous. Scientists discovered a massive bloom of phytoplankton in 2012, which was the largest known oceanic bloom. Some of these organisms, specifically the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, can be dangerous. They exist in dormant states called cyst beds on the ocean floor. These beds cover 145,600 square kilometers, an area similar to the state of Iowa. If environmental conditions are right, these cysts germinate and become active. During this active stage, they produce saxitoxin, a potent neurotoxin. This toxin can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning if it moves up the food chain.

The germination process of these cysts depends heavily on water temperature. At a bottom temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, it takes about 28 days for cysts to germinate. If the temperature rises to 8 degrees Celsius, the process speeds up to just 10 days. Because of climate change, warmer summer waters are causing these blooms to start three weeks earlier than they did two decades ago. This change extends the window for harmful blooms to appear at the surface. Such shifts in the environment can impact the entire marine food web.

Beyond biology, the Chukchi Sea is a site of significant economic interest. The Chukchi Shelf is believed to contain large oil and gas reserves. In 2008, the U.S. government held an auction for extraction rights that raised billions of dollars. However, exploring these resources is difficult and expensive. In 2015, Shell Oil ended its exploration in the region due to high costs and declining oil prices. The sea remains a complex intersection of natural wonder, biological risk, and industrial interest.
