This water-rich melt stays liquid at lower temperatures, allowing rare elements to concentrate. These elements, such as beryllium, lithium, or niobium, eventually form their own distinctive minerals. The high water content allows crystals to grow very quickly. This rapid growth often results in the large crystals found in pegmatites.

There are three primary varieties of chrysoberyl: ordinary yellow-to-green, cymophane, and alexandrite. Ordinary chrysoberyl is typically yellowish-green and can be transparent or translucent. While the Ural Mountains in Russia were once the primary source, large stones are now also found in Brazil. Other deposits exist in India, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka.

The history of alexandrite includes a famous but debated discovery story. Many believe the Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld discovered it in 1842. He reportedly named the stone to honor the future Russian Emperor Alexander II. He initially thought the sample was an emerald. However, recent research suggests the mineral may have been discovered by Yakov Kokovin. Because of its beauty, alexandrite is recognized as one of the official birthstones for June. Today, scientists can also produce synthetic alexandrite in labs. These can be made through methods like flux-growth, the Czochralski process, or hydrothermal production.

Because of the movement in water, chrysoberyl found in these placers often has rounded edges. This is different from the sharp, wedge-shaped forms found in original rock formations. This durability makes it a persistent part of the Earth's geological cycle.
