The designers even used special metal called Nirosta stainless steel. This metal was a new invention from Germany. It helped the building stay bright and shiny against the sky.

The construction of the tower involved a complex engineering process. The structure uses a steel frame that is infilled with masonry. This method allows the building to reach immense heights while remaining stable. The exterior is covered with 3,862 windows. To comply with the 1916 Zoning Resolution, the architect used specific setbacks. These are steps in the building's shape that allow light to reach the street. These setbacks occur on floors 16, 18, 23, 28, and 31. This design creates a shape that looks like a ziggurat on one side. On the other side, it resembles a U-shaped palazzo.

The building's facade features a variety of sophisticated materials. The lower sixteen floors are clad in white brick. This brick is interrupted by white-marble bands to create a basket-weaving effect. The ground floor uses polished black Shastone granite. The three floors above the ground level are covered in white marble from Georgia. Between the 16th and 24th floors, vertical white brick columns are separated by windows. This effect is achieved using aluminum spandrels. Spandrels are the panels that fill the space between the top of one window and the sill of the one above it. On the 24th floor, you can find decorative pineapples integrated into the design.

One of the most significant materials used is Nirosta stainless steel. This is an austenitic alloy developed in Germany by Krupp. It is an "18–8 stainless steel" containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This was the first time this specific alloy was used in an American project. The steel is used for the window frames, the crown, and the needle. The metal helps create rising lines that lead the eye upward. In 1929, the American Society for Testing Materials studied the steel's durability. They inspected the panels every five years until 1960. The committee found that the panels showed minimal deterioration over time.

The Chrysler Building is famous for its unique Art Deco ornamentation. The 31st floor serves as a visual tribute to the automotive industry. It features a gray and white frieze of hubcaps and fenders. These elements symbolize the Chrysler Corporation. The corners of this floor feature ornaments shaped like the winged helmet of Mercury. These resemble the hood ornaments found on Chrysler vehicles. On the 61st floor, large eagles serve as a nod to the national bird of America. The building also includes fifty metal ornaments that resemble Gothic gargoyles. These are located at the corners of five different floors.

The most recognizable feature is the terraced crown and spire. The crown consists of seven radiating terraced arches. It is a cruciform groin vault with seven concentric members. This design uses a sunburst pattern of ribbed and riveted Nirosta steel. The many triangular vaulted windows look like the spokes of a wheel. Because of the curved shape, the steel sheets had to be measured on-site. Most of the work was completed in workshops on the 67th and 75th floors. This crown makes the building appear to dissolve into the sky. It creates an atmosphere that feels both modern and fantastic.

The building has played many roles in the history of New York City. In 1938, WCBS-TV began its first transmissions from the top of the tower. The building was also a site for various radio and television stations. Beyond media, it is a protected piece of history. The facade and interior were designated as New York City landmarks in 1978. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. In 2007, the American Institute of Architects ranked it ninth on its list of America's Favorite Architecture. It remains a vital part of the city's skyline and cultural identity.
