Christian Lous Lange was a prominent Norwegian historian and political scientist. He lived from 1869 to 1938. Lange was a leading expert on internationalism. Internationalism is the theory that nations should work together to maintain peace. He believed that discussion and cooperation were better than conflict. His career focused on building systems for global stability.

Lange began his academic journey in Stavanger, Norway. His father worked as a military engineer. His grandfather, Christian C. A. Lange, was also a historian. Lange studied history, English, and French at the University of Oslo. He earned his cand. philol. degree in 1893. Later, he returned to the university to earn a doctorate. This advanced degree shows his deep commitment to historical research.

His professional work in international relations started in 1899. He served as a secretary for an Oslo conference for the Inter-Parliamentary Union. This organization helps parliamentarians from different countries talk to one another. In 1900, he became the secretary of the Nobel Committee for the Norwegian Parliament. He also served as a technical delegate at the Second Hague Peace Conference. These roles helped him understand how international laws might work.

Lange held a major leadership role in the Inter-Parliamentary Union for many years. He was appointed secretary general in 1909. He held this position until 1933. During his leadership, he managed several large transitions for the organization. He oversaw the move to Brussels, Belgium. He then sustained the group in Oslo during World War I. Finally, he moved the headquarters to Geneva, Switzerland.

Beyond one group, Lange was active in many international organizations. He acted as a delegate or alternate delegate for the League of Nations. The League of Nations was a group formed to prevent future wars. He also worked with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He was an expert in two specific areas: arbitration and arms control. Arbitration is when people use a neutral third party to settle disputes. Arms control involves managing the number of weapons nations possess.

Lange used his writing to support his political ideas. In 1919, he published the first part of a three-volume historical work. This work is titled *Histoire de l'internationalisme*. It explored the history of how nations interact. Many believed this book helped prepare the ideas for the League of Nations. His scholarly work and his practical leadership led to a major honor. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He shared this award with Hjalmar Branting.

Lange's influence extended into his personal and family life. He was a member of the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights. He had three sons: Carl Viggo, Halvard, and Christian August. His daughter, Thora, was also a teacher of history and languages. During the German occupation of Norway, Thora joined the resistance movement. This shows how the values of his family continued through difficult times. Lange died in 1938 at the age of 69.

Today, Lange's legacy remains visible in Norway. His family has kept his Nobel Peace Prize medal for many years. Since 2005, they have placed it on long-term loan to the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo. Visitors can view the medal in the center's Medal Chamber. His life serves as a study of how one person can promote global cooperation. He moved from studying the past to helping shape a more peaceful future.
