Chonos Archipelago

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Chonos Archipelago is a group of islands. They sit in the Aisén Region of Chile. These islands are long and low. They also have mountains. Many islands have deep bays. Most of the land is covered in forests. Very few people live there.

A deep water path is called the Moraleda Channel. It sits between the islands and the mainland. Some islands form smaller groups. One group is the Guaitecas Archipelago. It has one town called Melinka.

Many large islands are in this group. These include Melchor and Benjamin islands. Guamblin Island sits far out in the Pacific Ocean. It has a large national park. The park is about 106 square kilometers. You can often see blue whales in the water there.

The islands are very green. Many have Pilgerodendron forests. You might also see small cushion plants. In some areas, shrubs grow two meters high. These areas are called shrublands. People mapped these islands a long time ago. Men like Enrique Simpson studied them in the 1870s.
