Chlamydia pneumoniae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a tiny bacterium that can cause many sicknesses. It is an obligate intracellular pathogen. This means it must live inside a living cell to reproduce. This germ is a major cause of pneumonia around the world. People often catch it in their local communities. It can also cause bronchitis or pharyngitis. Some studies even link it to heart issues like coronary artery disease.

The germ has a very special way of working. It starts as an elementary body, or EB. The EB is not active, but it can survive outside a host. It travels through the air in small droplets. When a person breathes these in, the EB enters the lung cells. The cell takes the EB inside a small pouch. Once inside, the EB changes into a reticulate body, or RB.

This new RB stage is when the germ grows. The RB uses the host cell's energy to make more bacteria. After it replicates, the RBs turn back into elementary bodies. These new EBs are released to find new cells. Often, this process causes the host cell to die. The new EBs can then infect other cells or new people. This cycle helps the bacterium spread and survive.

Scientists have studied this bacterium for a long time. The first known case was in Taiwan in 1950. It was a case of eye redness called conjunctivitis. Before 1950, there were no known cases in human history. It was once even thought to be a virus. Later, it was called the Taiwan acute respiratory agent, or TWAR. This name came from two original samples called TW-183 and AR-39. The full genome sequence was finally published in 1999.

This bacterium affects many different living things. It can infect koalas, iguanas, and even frogs. It can also make turtles and emerald tree boas sick. In humans, it is a common cause of atypical pneumonia. This type of pneumonia is different from other kinds. It is hard to see with a standard gram stain. Doctors often use special antibiotics like azithromycin to treat it. There is still no vaccine to prevent these infections.
