The Chittagong Division, officially known as the Chattogram Division, is a major administrative region. It is located in the southeasternmost part of Bangladesh. Geographically, it is the largest of the eight divisions in the country.
The administrative structure of the division is quite detailed. Currently, the division is subdivided into eleven districts, which are called zilas. These eleven districts are further divided into 100 sub-districts, known as upazilas. The division can be viewed in two distinct geographical portions. These two sections are separated by the lower stretch of the Feni River. The north-western portion contains the first six districts. The south-eastern portion contains the remaining five districts.
These two portions have very different characteristics regarding land and people. The north-western portion covers 37.6% of the total area. However, it holds a much larger share of the population at 58.3%. In contrast, the south-eastern portion covers 62.4% of the land. Only 41.7% of the population lives in this larger area. This south-eastern section includes the upland districts. These are Khagrachhari, Rangamati, and Bandarban. Together, these three districts make up the area formerly known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The history of the division shows how its borders have changed over time. It was established as an administrative division in 1829. At that time, it served as a headquarters for five easternmost districts of Bengal. The Chittagong District acted as the primary headquarters. In 1960, the Tippera district was renamed the Comilla District. A major change occurred in 1984 when fifteen new districts were created. This happened by separating and reducing the original five districts. These original districts were Chittagong, Comilla, Hill Tracts, Noakhali, and Sylhet.
During this 1984 reorganization, several specific splits took place. The Chittagong District became Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. The Comilla District was split into Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Chandpur. The Hill Tracts District was divided into Bandarban, Khagrachhari, and Rangamati. The Noakhali District was split into Noakhali, Lakshmipur, and Feni. Finally, the Sylhet District was divided into four parts. These were Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, and Sunamganj. In 1995, these four Sylhet districts were moved to form the new Sylhet Division.
The demographics of the division are quite large and diverse. According to the 2022 census, the population was 33,202,326 people. This makes it the second most populous division in Bangladesh. It is also the 45th most populous subnational entity in the world. This means it has more people than 43 other countries.
Religious diversity is also a notable feature of the population. The 2022 census shows that 90.11% of the people are Muslims. Hindus make up 6.61% of the population. Buddhists account for 2.92%. Christians represent 0.22% of the people. There is also a small group of 0.14% who identify as other religions. This mix of people lives across the various districts, from the coastal areas to the high hills. The division remains a vital part of the administrative and natural landscape of Bangladesh.
