People also call it the sea wasp. It lives in warm coastal waters. These waters go from Australia to Vietnam. Its body is pale blue and clear. This makes it hard to see in the ocean.

This jellyfish has four corners on its bell. Each corner has a cluster of 15 tentacles. The tentacles are covered in stinging cells. We call these cells cnidocytes.

When these cells touch something, they shoot tiny darts. These darts give off a very strong venom. The sting can cause great pain. It can even cause death in a few minutes.

Box jellyfish hunt during the day. At night, they rest on the ocean floor. They have 24 eyes in four clusters. They eat small fish, prawns, and crabs. Sea turtles are their only known predators. The turtles have thick skin. This skin protects them from the stinging darts.

In some places, signs warn people to stay out of the water.
