Adult crabs are also sensitive to heat and are unlikely to tolerate temperatures above 5 °C. While they have high fecundity, meaning they can produce many offspring, they are highly vulnerable to environmental changes. A single female can spawn up to 100,000 eggs, and the gestation period can last up to two years.
