Leaders named Mao Zedong and Zhu De started it. The state was made of many separate areas. Most of these lands were in southern China. The main capital was the city of Ruijin. Mao was the head of the state. He also led the government.

The group made big changes for farmers. They used a new law to share land. They took land from rich owners. Then they gave it to poor peasants. This helped people who worked in the fields.

The state even made its own money. They had paper bills and silver coins.

Life was hard for the group. The Kuomintang army fought against them. They used many campaigns to surround the state. In 1934, the group had to leave. They began a very long trip. This was called the Long March. Many people had to walk to find safety. The state ended in 1937. This happened when a new alliance was made to fight Japan.
