Working with jade is a hard job. The stone is very tough and dense.
Jade making began in the Neolithic period. This was a very long time ago.

Many different places provide jade. Most jade today comes from Xinjiang.

Jade is part of many daily things. It can be used for writing tools.
Chinese jade refers to the various minerals mined and carved in China since the Neolithic period. It serves as the primary hardstone used in Chinese sculpture. While bright green jadeite is well-known in Europe, most Chinese history focuses on nephrite. Within this category, white "mutton-fat" nephrite is the most highly prized variety. Jade is valued for its extreme hardness, durability, and musical qualities. Because of its translucent colors, it is deeply connected to Chinese ideas of the soul and immortality. In many traditions, it is viewed as a symbol of heaven, often paired with gold.
Working with jade requires a specific process called the abrasion method. Because jade is so dense and tough, it cannot be easily cut like softer stones. Instead, a worker must use an object with a higher abrasive factor to wear the jade down. In ancient times, craftsmen used quartz to shape the stone. During the Song dynasty, a substance called "red sand" with a hardness of 7.5 became the primary tool.
Early jade production is categorized by several distinct Neolithic cultures. The Liangzhu culture, located in the Lake Tai District, produced small items like perforated discs for necklaces. The Yangshao culture also left evidence of jade processing workshops in Henan province. These workshops were quite large, with two sites covering more than 120 square meters each.
Another important group was the Hongshan culture near the modern northeastern border of China. They were known for making pendants and large C-shaped ornaments. Their carvings often depicted realistic figures such as fish, turtles, cicadas, and owl-like birds.
Specific ritual shapes emerged that held deep cosmic significance. The bi is a circular disk with a hole, which later literature associated with the sky. The cong is a vessel that is square on the outside but circular on the inside, representing the earth.
Historically, jade has been sourced from various regions, including the northwestern province of Xinjiang. Collection often takes place in rivers like the Yarkand, the White Jade (Yurungkash), and the Black Jade (Karakash) Rivers.
Jade remains a vital part of Chinese artistic and cultural identity. It has been used for writing materials, such as rests for calligraphy brushes. It was even used as mouthpieces for opium pipes because people believed breathing through jade could promote longevity.
