This culture spreads across a vast region in East Asia known as the Sinosphere. It is incredibly diverse, with traditions varying greatly between different regions. Today, its festivals and traditions are practiced by people all over the world.

Identity within this culture is complex and widespread. The Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group in the world. They number over 1.3 billion people, which is about 17% of the global population. They make up 92% of China and 95% of Taiwan. In modern China, there are 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. Historically, the government divided people into four social classes. These were the gentry, farmers, craftsmen, and merchants. While the Emperor's position was hereditary, most other roles were not. The concept of Zhonghua minzu is often used to describe Chinese nationalism.

Regional differences create a rich variety of local customs. There is an old proverb that says customs vary within just a hundred li. This means that even small distances can bring different traditions.

Each region is often represented by three ancestral items. For example, the city of Lin'an is represented by tea leaves, bamboo shoots, and hickory nuts. The Guangdong region is represented by aged ginger, hay, and chenpi. These distinctions show how deeply local identity is rooted. Even the 31 provincial-level divisions in China are grouped by their traditional regions.

Social structure has evolved through many different stages. In ancient times, the government and military officials held high rank. From the late Zhou dynasty, society used a system of four occupations. However, these lines became blurred during the Song dynasty due to increased commercialization.

Education played a vital role in social movement. Since the Sui dynasty, candidates prepared for the imperial examination system. This created a meritocracy, where people earned positions through skill. Applicants had to write essays and master the Confucian classics. Those who passed the highest level were called jinshi, or elite scholar-officials.

Spiritual life is shaped by several major belief systems. Most practices derive from Chinese Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

These traditions often interact and overlap. For instance, Chinese Buddhism is marked by connections to Indian religions and Taoism. Many people also believe in a spiritual world filled with deities. Recognized holy figures include Guan Yin, the Jade Emperor, and Buddha. Concepts like reincarnation remind people of the connection between life and the afterlife. In business, the concept of guanxi emphasizes the importance of personal relations over strict rules.

Taoism is a major philosophical and religious tradition. It traces its roots back to at least the 4th century BCE.

Taoism emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao, or "the Way." The Tao is seen as the source and pattern of everything in existence. Unlike Confucianism, Taoism does not focus on rigid social orders. It emphasizes "wu wei," which means effortless action. Other key values include simplicity, spontaneity, and the Three Treasures: compassion, frugality, and humility. The Tao Te Ching is a central text of this tradition.

Confucianism, or Ruism, served as the official philosophy for much of Imperial China. It developed from the teachings of Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 BCE.

This philosophy focuses on social order and how to govern. Mastery of Confucian texts was required to enter the government bureaucracy. There were also other influential thoughts, such as Legalism, which was more authoritarian. During the Song dynasty, Neo-Confucians emerged to debate these different ideas. Today, many people discuss how these traditional values fit with modern democratic ideals.
