Before the revolution, China faced many hard problems. The old Qing dynasty fell in 1912. This left the country in a state of disunity. Different groups and warlords fought for power. Many people were very poor and hungry. In many places, farmers owned almost no land. They had to rent land from wealthy landlords. Some farmers had to give away most of their crops as rent. The CCP was founded in 1921 by urban thinkers. At first, they joined with a larger group called the Kuomintang. This was known as the First United Front. They wanted to stop the warlords together. However, this alliance ended in 1927. The CCP had to flee to the countryside to survive. During this time, a leader named Mao Zedong became very important. He worked with peasants to build support. War with Japan changed everything again. Japan took over parts of China like Manchuria. This forced the CCP and the Kuomintang to form a Second United Front. They fought together against the Japanese invasion. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the civil war started again. The Nationalists had help from the United States. The Communists had help from the Soviet Union. The fighting was very intense across the country. Many cities faced high prices and no jobs.

Before the revolution, China faced a period called the "century of humiliation." The Qing dynasty, which had ruled for centuries, declined due to economic stagnation and corruption. In 1912, the Qing dynasty collapsed. It was replaced by the Republic of China. However, the Republic soon fell into disunity. Various warring factions and warlords controlled different regions. This instability created deep social and economic problems for the people.

Rural life was particularly difficult for the majority of the population. Most agricultural land was owned by a small class of wealthy landlords. Between 50 and 65 percent of peasants owned little to no land. In southern regions like Guangdong, over half the rural population owned nothing. These peasants had to rent land to survive. They often paid rent through cash or a share of their harvest. In some areas, landlords took as much as 80 percent of the crop.

In 1921, a small group of urban intellectuals founded the CCP. They were inspired by European socialist ideas and the October Revolution. Initially, the CCP formed an alliance with the Kuomintang, or KMT. This group was known as the First United Front. They worked together to overthrow local warlords. However, the KMT leader Chiang Kai-shek ended this alliance in 1927. He initiated the Shanghai massacre, forcing the CCP to flee to the countryside.

While in the remote countryside, the CCP developed new strategies. They focused on land reform to appeal to the peasantry. A leader named Mao Zedong became very influential during this time. He helped turn the Jiangxi Soviet into a "state within a state." In 1935, the Communists suffered a major military defeat. They began the Long March to reach a new base in northwest China. This journey helped Mao rise to undisputed leadership of the CCP.

Conflict with Japan changed the course of the revolution. Japan seized Manchuria and other Chinese territories. The CCP argued that the KMT and CCP should unite against Japan. This led to the Second United Front in 1937. The Communists used guerrilla warfare behind Japanese lines to expand their influence. After Japan surrendered in 1945, a new struggle began. The country became a battlefield in the early Cold War. The Nationalists were supported by the United States. The Communists received support from the Soviet Union.

As the Civil War continued, the Nationalists faced growing problems. Urban areas suffered from high unemployment and runaway inflation. Government corruption also caused many people to lose faith in the KMT. The People's Liberation Army, the CCP's military, launched successful campaigns. They defeated the Nationalist forces by 1949. The Nationalists were forced to retreat to the island of Taiwan. On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was officially proclaimed.

The revolution had massive global consequences. China became the largest socialist state by population. It also became a major force in the Cold War. After the 1956 Sino-Soviet split, China acted as a third force. The success of the CCP inspired many other communist movements. This led to military interventions by the United States in Korea and Southeast Asia. Today, the CCP remains the government of mainland China. It is currently the second-largest political party in the world.
