It serves as the capital of the Lambayeque region and the Chiclayo Province. The city sits in a strategic position between the Pacific coast and the capital city of Lima. It is also located near the city of Trujillo. As one of the most important hubs in the north, it acts as a center for commerce and finance. In 2011, the city had a population of approximately 738,000 people. This makes it the fourth-largest city in Peru, following Lima, Arequipa, and Trujillo.

The city is organized into several distinct administrative areas. It is divided into three main urban districts: Chiclayo, La Victoria, and José Leonardo Ortiz. When looking at the broader metropolitan area, there are 12 districts in total. Chiclayo is the second most populous city in Northwestern Peru. Its growth has made it a vital center for banking, hospitals, and large supermarkets. The city also serves as a communications and automotive hub for the region.

The climate in Chiclayo is characterized as a warm and very dry desert climate. Although it is located in a tropical zone near the Equator, it feels more like a subtropical climate. This is because of strong winds known as "cyclones" that lower the temperature. These winds help keep the weather moderate for most of the year. During the summer months, which run from December to May, the heat increases. Daytime temperatures typically range from 27 °C to 30 °C. During February and March, temperatures can peak at 33 °C.

Chiclayo has a deep history that stretches back to ancient civilizations. Before the Spanish arrived, the Moche culture occupied the area from 100 to 700 AD. The Moche were experts in hydraulic engineering. They built complex canal systems to support large-scale agriculture. This allowed them to produce food surpluses and grow a strong economy. They were also known for their skilled use of copper and beautiful ceramics. Some of these ceramics, called huaco-portraits, show amazing realism.

Following the Moche, the Sican culture, also known as the Lambayeque culture, thrived from 700 to 1375 AD. The Sican people assimilated much of the knowledge from the Moche. They were particularly skilled in architecture, jewelry, and navigation. However, their civilization faced great challenges. A thirty-year drought around the year 1020 and multiple El Niño disasters contributed to their fall. Eventually, the Chimu Empire took control of the territory. Later, the Inca Empire integrated the region into the Chinchaysuyo during their northern expansion.

The modern history of the city began in the 16th century with Spanish Franciscan priests. They founded the town as "Santa María de los Valles de Chiclayo." It originally served as a small place for travelers to rest. During the Peruvian War of Independence, the citizens of Chiclayo provided soldiers, weapons, and horses to the liberating army. This bravery led President Felipe Santiago Salaverry to declare it an official city on 15 April 1835. He gave it the title "the Heroic City" to honor their service.

Today, Chiclayo remains a significant cultural and tourist destination. Visitors often travel to the city to reach the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum. This museum houses thousands of artifacts from the Moche culture. The most famous items are the Sipán mummies, which are a major attraction. The city is also known by friendly nicknames like "The Capital of Friendship" and "the Pearl of the North."
