geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Cheshire is a county in North West England.

It sits near the border of Wales. To the north are Merseyside and Greater Manchester. To the south are Staffordshire and Shropshire.

The land has many different looks. Much of it is the Cheshire Plain. This is a wide area of flat land. A ridge called Mid-Cheshire runs through it. In the east, the land rises into the Pennines. These are part of the Peak District.

Two rivers flow through the area. The River Mersey runs through the north. The River Dee forms part of the border with Wales. It flows through the city of Chester. Many old buildings in the county use red sandstone. This is a type of red rock found in the ground.
