This power plant was in the Soviet Union. Workers were running a test on reactor number four. They wanted to see how it would work during a blackout.

During the test, the power in the reactor dropped too low. To fix this, workers moved many control rods. This caused a sudden power surge. The reactor exploded and a fire started.

The fire sent radioactive dust into the air. This dust spread across Europe. Many people had to leave their homes. A large area was made to keep people safe.

This is called an exclusion zone. It was first 10 km wide. Later, it grew to 30 km. Workers used robots to help clean up.

They also built a big cover called a sarcophagus. Later, a new safe cover was built to help clean up the debris. This work will last until 2065.
