Later, things in the palace changed. A lady named Lady Wan became very powerful. She was the Emperor's favorite. She used her power to help her friends. This led to corruption, which means people were being unfair to get money. Many people in the government became dishonest. This caused many problems for the country.

For a long time, the Emperor did not have a son to follow him. In 1475, he found out he had a five-year-old son. The boy had been kept hidden for safety. The boy's name was Zhu Youcheng. He grew up to be the next emperor.

The Chenghua Emperor was the ninth ruler of the Ming dynasty in China. He was born on December 9, 1447, as Zhu Jianshen. His life was full of changes before he even became leader. When he was only two years old, Mongol forces captured his father, Emperor Yingzong. During this time, his uncle became the Jingtai Emperor. Zhu Jianshen was named the heir, but his uncle later took that title away. He was finally made the heir again in 1457 after a coup.

Zhu Jianshen began his reign in 1464 at the age of sixteen. He chose the era name Chenghua, which means "accomplished change." At first, he made choices to help the country grow. He started new policies like cutting taxes for the people. He also worked to make the state much stronger. However, these positive changes did not last forever. As time went on, the good impact of his early rules began to fade.

Life inside the Forbidden City became very difficult for many. A woman named Lady Wan became the Emperor's favorite. She had been his nanny and was much older than him. Lady Wan held a huge amount of power over the Emperor. She used her influence to help her own group of supporters. This led to widespread corruption in the government. People used their positions to get rich at the expense of the state treasury.

Because of this corruption, many people in the country were unhappy. Peasant uprisings broke out in many places. The Emperor used secret police to watch how people felt. A man named Wang Zhi led a secret police force called the Western Depot. He and other powerful eunuchs made life hard for many officials. The Emperor also became more autocratic, which means he took more total control. He often punished officials who spoke out against the unfair actions of his favorites.

Even with these problems, the Emperor was a strong military leader. During the 1470s, his reorganized troops won big battles against the Mongols. These were the first major wins since 1449. He also helped build walls in Shaanxi and Shanxi. These walls were part of what we now call the Great Wall of China. He even formed an alliance with Korea to fight Jurchen tribes. In 1475, the Emperor finally found his hidden son, Zhu Youcheng. The boy grew up to be the next ruler, the Hongzhi Emperor.

Zhu Jianshen's path to the throne was very uncertain. He was born on December 9, 1447, to Emperor Yingzong and Lady Zhou. When he was only two years old, Mongol forces captured his father during the Battle of Tumu Fortress in 1449. This event caused his uncle, Zhu Qiyu, to become the Jingtai Emperor. Although Zhu Jianshen was named heir, his uncle removed him from that position in 1452. He lived as the Prince of Yi under difficult conditions and even developed a stutter. It was not until 1457 that a coup restored his father to power. On March 1, 1457, his father officially reappointed him as the heir.

When the Emperor took control in 1464 at age sixteen, he initially made positive changes. He implemented tax cuts and focused on strengthening the state's power. To help him rule, a twelve-member imperial council was appointed. This group included six officials, such as Senior Grand Secretary Li Xian, and four eunuchs. It also included two military generals. However, these early successes eventually diminished. The Emperor's preference for personal favorites over capable leaders began to erode the government. This shift led to widespread corruption that drained the state treasury.

Internal palace politics also created great instability. A major conflict arose immediately regarding the title of Empress Dowager. Both the Emperor's stepmother, Empress Qian, and his biological mother, Lady Zhou, claimed the title. The Emperor eventually allowed both women to hold the title to settle the dispute. His marriage to Empress Wu was also short-lived. She clashed with his favorite, Lady Wan, and was deposed just one month after their wedding. She remained in seclusion within the Forbidden City for 45 years.

Lady Wan held immense and controversial influence over the Emperor. She had been his nanny and was 34 years old when he ascended the throne at seventeen. She became a powerful concubine and controlled much of the court. Lady Wan used her loyal eunuchs to protect her own position. This included forcing other women to have abortions to prevent rivals from having children. In 1475, the Emperor discovered a five-year-old son, Zhu Youcheng, who had been hidden for years. This boy was the son of a woman named Lady Ji. He eventually succeeded his father as the Hongzhi Emperor.

During the later years, Lady Wan's group became involved in many illegal activities. Her agents engaged in mining for gold, silver, and copper in Yunnan. They also controlled trade in pearls and salt. A eunuch named Liang Fang managed the imperial warehouse and sold goods at high prices. Another man, Wang Zhi, led a secret police force called the Western Depot. This force was created in 1477 to supplement the existing Eastern Depot. Wang Zhi and his followers used their power to terrorize the elite in Beijing. The Emperor often punished officials who tried to stop this corruption.

Despite these internal struggles, the Emperor was a capable military leader. In the 1470s, he reorganized the Ming troops to face the Mongols. These troops achieved the first major victories against them since 1449. He also ordered the construction of defensive walls in Shaanxi and Shanxi. These fortifications laid the groundwork for the enduring Great Wall of China. Additionally, the Ming dynasty formed an alliance with Korea. This allowed them to wage war against the Jurchen tribes in eastern Manchuria. His reign showed how a single leader could simultaneously strengthen a nation's borders and weaken its internal government.
