Charles the Bold was the final Duke of Burgundy from the House of Valois-Burgundy.

He ruled his vast territories from 1467 until his death in 1477. Charles was the only surviving legitimate son of Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal. He is often remembered by the nicknames "the Bold" or "the Rash." His main goal was to transform his collection of lands into a single, independent kingdom. He wanted this realm to stretch continuously from the North Sea to the borders of Savoy.

To achieve this massive goal, Charles used both diplomacy and warfare. He worked to acquire territories like Guelders and Upper Alsace to connect his lands. He even sought the prestigious title of King of the Romans. These actions made him a growing enemy of the German states. To secure an alliance with England, he married Margaret of York. He also arranged for his only child, Mary, to marry Maximilian of Austria. These marriages were strategic moves meant to strengthen his political position in Europe.

Charles was a man of intense discipline and high culture.

His court was a famous center for chivalry, etiquette, and the arts. He was a passionate musician and a patron of many artists. He specifically supported the creation of illuminated manuscripts, which are books decorated with gold and bright colors. Charles was also obsessed with strict order and regulation. He issued many ordinances to control military matters, legislation, and diplomacy in minute detail. He was a religious man who looked to Saint George as his patron saint.

His path to power was marked by deep family tension.

Between 1454 and 1464, his father, Philip the Good, excluded him from the ducal council. They disagreed sharply over political appointments and the influence of certain families. In 1457, the conflict became so severe that Charles fled to Dendermonde. It took the mediation of his pregnant wife, Isabella of Bourbon, to reach a truce. Even after becoming Duke in 1467, he had to fight rivals like King Louis XI of France. In 1465, Charles had even led a successful revolt called the War of the Public Weal.

In the final years of his life, Charles entered a period of intense conflict.

The Burgundian Wars took place between 1474 and 1477. During this time, Charles fought to keep ownership of Upper Alsace. He faced a multi-national alliance known as the Lower League. This group consisted of Swiss, German, and Alsatian polities. Charles attempted a major siege of the city of Neuss, but it was unsuccessful. These military struggles weakened his grip on his territories.

Defeat eventually followed his attempts at expansion. Charles suffered significant losses at the battles of Grandson and Morat.

These defeats set the stage for his final confrontation. On 5 January 1477, Charles was killed during the Battle of Nancy. He was fighting against an army led by Duke René II of Lorraine and the Swiss. His death was a turning point for all of Europe.

The end of Charles's life also meant the end of his state. His death triggered the War of the Burgundian Succession. This conflict led to the final collapse of the Burgundian State. Charles's daughter, Mary, was the last member of his specific dynasty. Through her, the inheritance changed hands. Her son, Philip of Austria, eventually inherited the Burgundian Netherlands. The dream of a continuous Burgundian kingdom died with Charles at Nancy.
