Charles Fourier was a French philosopher who lived from 1772 to 1837.

He is known as a founder of utopian socialism. This means he imagined perfect ways for people to live together. He believed that cooperation was the key to a successful society. Fourier thought that working together would make people much more productive. He also believed that people should be paid based on their work. Many of his ideas were very radical during his lifetime. Some of his thoughts have actually become part of modern society. He is even credited with creating the word feminism in 1837.

Fourier had a specific plan for how these communities would work. He called these groups "phalanxes."

People in a phalanx would live in large buildings called phalansteries. These were like grand hotels with four levels of apartments. The richest people lived in the top apartments. The poorest people lived on the ground floor. Jobs were assigned based on a person's interests and desires. People who did jobs they did not like could earn higher pay. This was meant to keep everyone motivated and happy.

Fourier's life began in Besançon, France, in 1772. He was the son of a small businessman. As a boy, he loved geography and music. He even tried to study at a military school. After his father died in 1781, Fourier received a large inheritance. This money allowed him to travel across Europe. He worked in many cities like Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. He worked as a salesman and a clerk for many years. He eventually began writing books to share his big ideas. Most of his writing happened between 1816 and 1821.

His ideas about human nature were very detailed. Fourier believed there were 12 common passions in people. He thought these passions created 810 different types of characters. Because of this, he thought an ideal phalanx should have 1,620 people. He also had strong views on women's rights. He believed women should have access to any job based on skill. He did not think gender should stop someone from working. He also believed that children were very industrious. He noticed that even young children liked to examine and change things.

Many people were inspired by his visions of harmony. In the United States, people started several phalanxes. Some were in Ohio, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. One famous group was the North American Phalanx in Red Bank.

His ideas also reached many famous writers and thinkers. Some people even thought his ideas were quite strange. He once said the seas might turn into lemonade one day. He also thought the North Pole would one day become warm. Even with these wild ideas, he remains a major figure in history.
