Bell's path to becoming a famous doctor was not always easy. He studied at the University of Edinburgh starting in 1792. He worked as an apprentice for his brother, John Bell. Later, Bell moved to London in 1804 to start a new career. He bought a house on Leicester Street to teach his students. He also bought a share in the Great Windmill Street School of Anatomy. He spent many years teaching anatomy and surgery there. He even became a professor at the College of Surgeons in London in 1824.

Bell's life included many important dates and places. He graduated from his university in 1798. In 1803, he finished writing and illustrating parts of a book about the human body. He also published a book of drawings about the brain and nerves. During wars, Bell worked as a surgeon for wounded soldiers. He helped people at Corunna in 1809. He also worked at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He spent three days and nights operating on soldiers in a hospital. In 1824, he sold a huge collection of 3,000 wax models for £3000.

We can see Bell's work in many places today. His wax models are kept at Surgeon's Hall. Some of his drawings of wounds are in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Bell also made a major discovery regarding the facial nerve, also called the seventh cranial nerve. He proved that this specific nerve is a nerve of muscular action. Before this, surgeons often cut this nerve to try to cure facial neuralgia, a type of nerve pain. Because they did not understand its function, this procedure often caused permanent paralysis on one side of the face. This condition is now known as Bell's palsy. By identifying the nerve's role in muscle movement, Bell provided a vital piece of medical knowledge. His research helped prevent further accidental harm to patients during surgery.

Bell's early life in Edinburgh shaped his diverse talents. He was the fourth son of the Reverend William Bell. After his father died in 1779, his mother took charge of his education. She taught him to read and write. She also supported his artistic growth by paying for lessons with David Allan, a famous Scottish painter. Bell attended the High School in Edinburgh and later enrolled at the University of Edinburgh in 1792. He studied anatomy and also took drawing classes to refine his skills. He eventually graduated in 1798 and began teaching at the Edinburgh College of Surgeons.

His professional journey included many different roles and locations. In 1804, he moved to London to establish his own practice. He taught anatomy and surgery to medical students and artists alike. During times of war, Bell served as a civilian surgeon for wounded soldiers. He volunteered to help at Corunna in 1809. He also served at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
