Barkla studied how X-rays work. X-rays are a special kind of light. He used a new way to study them. He looked at how gases react to X-rays. He proved that X-rays can be polarised. This means the light waves move in a set way. This showed that X-rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation. This is a type of energy that travels through space.

Because of his work, he won a Nobel Prize in 1917. This is a very big prize for science. He also won the Hughes Medal. Barkla lived in Edinburgh for many years. He worked as a professor there. People still honor him today. There is even a crater on the Moon named after him. A plaque marks where he lived in Edinburgh.
